Elevation glass

How glass reads on a front elevation

In India the front of a house is called its elevation, and glass is the material that decides how that elevation reads from the road — where the light lands in the evening, which lines carry across the face of the building, how solid or open the whole thing looks. These are the five places glass usually does that work.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing on the upper floors

The most visible move on any elevation: full-height glazing across an upper-floor room, so the face of the building reads as one plane instead of a wall with holes in it. Frame colour matters more than people expect — a dark frame draws the grid, a slim one lets the glass disappear — and so does what you can see through it from the street after dark.

The railing as the elevation’s horizontal line

A balcony railing runs the full width of the facade, so it is the strongest horizontal on most elevations. Frameless glass keeps that line quiet and lets the balcony floor read as depth; a post-and-rail system draws it as a repeated rhythm. The choice changes the elevation far more than the choice of tile behind it.

Structural glazing and shopfront bands

Where a face is mostly glass, it is usually structural glazing: panels bonded to a frame behind them so no framing shows on the outside, read from the street as a continuous surface with joint lines. A ground-floor commercial band is the same idea at eye level, where the glass has to work as a display as well as a wall.

The entrance

An entrance in glass is the one part of the elevation everybody stands in front of. It sets what people see of the hallway before they come in, which is why the glass is usually part-obscured — frosted, fluted, printed — rather than clear, and why the hardware on it gets noticed in a way that hardware elsewhere never does.

The skylight, seen from the street

A skylight is designed from inside and then shows up on the elevation anyway: as a lit plane on the roof at night, or as a slope that changes the roofline by day. Overhead glass is laminated for the obvious reason, and where the roof meets the frame is where the waterproofing gets decided — both worth settling before the look is finalised.

What exterior glass costs

Before you order exterior glass

  1. Safety glass on a railing is not optionalA railing guards a drop, so the glass has to be toughened or laminated-toughened safety glass carrying its permanent mark. Ask what happens when a panel breaks: laminated-toughened stays in the opening on its interlayer, plain toughened does not. Check the spec against IS 2553 before you accept a delivery.Check a quoted spec →
  2. Settle the height and the loads before the glassRailing height and the horizontal load the barrier has to resist come from your local building bylaw, the NBC and IS 875 (Part 2) for imposed loads — not from a glass supplier. Both feed into the thickness, so they are settled first and the glass follows.Indian glass standards →
  3. Wind pressure is part of the sum at heightDesign wind pressure comes from the basic wind speed where you are, the terrain around the building and the height above ground — IS 875 (Part 3) is the Indian code for it, and corners and edges of a face see more of it than the middle. A thickness quoted without those inputs is a guess.Wind load calculator (IS 875) →
  4. Thickness comes from the span and the fixingHow big the panel is, how it is supported and what holds it decide the thickness — not a rate card. A frameless panel on spigots and the same panel in a base channel do not need the same glass, and a bigger pane is not simply a thicker version of a smaller one.Thickness guide →
  5. Check what actually arrives on siteToughened glass carries a permanent stamp in one corner; laminated shows its interlayer at the edge. Look before the panels go up, because refusing a delivery is far easier than replacing installed glass at height.Types of glass compared →

Questions homeowners ask first

Which exterior surface should I sort out first?

Anything unsafe or leaking comes first — a loose balcony railing, a skylight letting water in. After that it is usually whatever people see: the railing line across the front, then the entrance. Each surface page explains what the work involves before you commit to it.

Is glass a sensible material outdoors in India?

It is, provided the glass and the hardware are specified for it. Outdoors adds wind pressure, monsoon rain and, near the coast, salt — which mostly changes the hardware grade and the thickness rather than the design itself.

Do I need a different professional for the balcony and the facade?

Often, yes. Railings and shopfronts are usually a different trade from structural glazing on a tall elevation, and a skylight brings waterproofing into it. Tell us everything you are planning at once and we can match you for each piece.

Will I get a price before anyone visits?

You can get a range. The indicative ranges on this page and in the price guide are aggregated from published city pages, so you can sanity-check what you are shown. A real number needs a measured site — heights, access and fixings cannot be priced off a photograph.

Does Glassy quote or install exterior glass?

No. Glassy is a directory of verified professionals. We do not fabricate, quote or fit anything — the professionals we connect you with price the job themselves, and no cut is taken from their quotation.

Is the builder’s existing railing worth replacing?

Sometimes it is purely a question of looks, because the standard metal railing already does its job; sometimes it is not, and the height or the anchoring is the reason to change it. Someone who has seen the balcony can tell you which case you are in.
