How to measure a glass partition

Measure a glass partition after flooring and false-ceiling work is done: take the width at three heights and the height at three points along the run, and use the smallest of each; check walls for plumb and the floor for level; and note switches, skirting, beams and AC units. Record everything in millimetres — the fabricator confirms final panel sizes.

Step-by-step

  1. Finish the floor and ceiling first. Measure only after flooring, skirting and any false ceiling are complete — each of them changes the opening the glass must fill.
  2. Measure the width at three heights. With a steel tape, measure the wall-to-wall width near the floor, at mid-height and near the ceiling, in millimetres.
  3. Measure the height at three points. For a full-height partition, measure floor-to-ceiling at the left end, centre and right end of the run — ceilings are rarely dead level.
  4. Use the smallest of each. Work from the smallest width and smallest height reading, because toughened glass cannot be trimmed on site.
  5. Check plumb and level. Hold a spirit level against both end walls and along the floor line, noting any lean or fall in millimetres and its direction.
  6. Note every obstruction along the run. Record switchboards, sockets, skirting, columns, beams, AC units and curtain tracks, each with its distance from the nearest wall and from the floor.
  7. Mark the door position and clearance. Decide where the door sits and which way it swings or slides, and check the full swing arc or sliding overlap is free of furniture and switches.
  8. Record everything in mm. Fill the checklist below, note where panel joints could fall on longer runs, photograph the space, and let your fabricator take the final site measure.

What to write down

Print this table, walk the partition line with a steel tape and a spirit level, and fill every row in millimetres before you talk to suppliers.

Common mistakes

Not sure which thickness to ask for? Typical Indian practice is 10mm toughened for framed and patch-fitted partitions, 12mm for frameless full-height glass walls — see the glass partition thickness guide for the full table.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure a glass partition before or after the false ceiling?

After. The partition glass runs to the finished ceiling, and a false ceiling commonly drops the height by 100mm or more. Measure floor-to-ceiling only once flooring, skirting and ceiling work are complete, and take the height at three points because ceilings are rarely level.

How wide can a single glass partition panel be?

Runs longer than about 2400–3000mm are usually split into multiple panels joined with clear silicone or polycarbonate H-joints — partly for handling and lift access, partly because oversized toughened panels cost more. Note on your checklist where a joint would be acceptable, and let the fabricator propose the split.

Do I give the fabricator opening sizes or glass sizes?

Give the opening sizes and your obstruction notes. The fabricator deducts allowances for channels, patch fittings, gaskets and door gaps, plans the panel split, and will normally re-measure on site before cutting — final glass sizes are their calculation.
