Two decisions cover almost every enclosure: how much frame there is, and how the door moves. Between them they set the price, how true the walls have to be, and how much of the enclosure you will be cleaning every week.
Thick toughened panels with no surrounding frame — hinges, clamps and a slim wall channel are the only metal touching the glass. It is the look most people mean by a glass shower, and it asks the most of the room: walls close to plumb, a solid fixing substrate behind the tile, and every hinge cut-out drilled before the glass is toughened. It also gives soap and mildew far less to sit in, which counts in daily use.
Framed where it helps and free where it shows: usually a channel against the walls, unframed vertical edges and a frameless door. It absorbs more site error than a fully frameless enclosure, uses thinner glass and lands between the two on price. For most Indian bathrooms this is the practical middle.
Every panel edge carried in an aluminium section. The frame takes up out-of-plumb walls that would defeat a frameless job, allows thinner glass and is the least expensive of the three. The trade-offs are visual and hygienic — more metal in the room, and more seals and corners that need cleaning.
Panels run on a track, so the door needs no clear space to swing — which is why sliding dominates in the compact bathrooms most Indian flats have. Roller quality is what you are really buying: good rollers with soft-close dampers still run quietly in year five, while cheap ones start to jam once the track has collected hard-water scale.
A hinged leaf gives the widest clear opening and the simplest seal line, and it needs swing space outside the shower plus a hinge fixing that can carry the leaf’s weight. Glass-to-glass hinges join the door to a fixed panel; wall-mounted hinges take it back to the tile. Most are set to swing outwards so water runs back into the tray.
A single fixed screen with no door at all, relying on the length of the panel and the fall of the floor to keep water in. It is the simplest to make and the easiest to clean, and it depends completely on the floor being laid to a proper slope towards the drain — get that wrong and no glass will keep the bathroom dry.

8 mm toughened is the common choice for sliding and semi-frameless enclosures, 10 mm is the usual frameless standard, and 12 mm appears on large hinged doors and long fixed panels. Frameless looks best and cleans easiest, and it needs walls close to plumb, a solid fixing substrate and accurate measurement. Framed is the most forgiving of an uneven bathroom and the least expensive, at the cost of more visible metal and more seals to clean. Semi-frameless sits between the two and is the practical answer in most Indian bathrooms.
Sliding if the bathroom is tight — the door needs no swing clearance, which is why it dominates in flats. Hinged if you have space outside the shower: it gives a wider clear opening and a simpler seal line. A fixed walk-in screen has no door at all and depends entirely on panel length and the fall of the floor.
Hard water. Most Indian municipal and borewell supplies carry dissolved calcium and magnesium; the water evaporates, the minerals stay behind, and over time they etch into the surface. Squeegeeing the glass after each use is the single most effective habit. A factory-applied water-repellent coating helps and can be asked for at the time of order, but it wears and does not replace wiping.
