A mirror is float glass with a reflective coating on the back and protective layers over it. Almost everything that varies between one quote and another comes down to what that coating is, how thick the glass under it is, and what has been done to the edges.
Float glass silvered on the back, sealed with a copper or copper-free layer and two coats of protective paint. It gives the brighter, truer reflection of the two common types and it holds up far better against moisture — which matters in any Indian bathroom and in coastal cities generally. It is the sensible default for anything you intend to keep for years.
The same idea with an aluminium coating instead of silver. It costs less and reflects slightly darker and cooler, and its weakness is damp: moisture reaching the back edge attacks the coating, which is what causes the black creeping in from the edges of an old bathroom mirror. Reasonable in a dry bedroom or a budget fit-out, a false economy over a wash basin.
Damp air, splashing and cleaning chemicals all attack a mirror from the back and the edges, so this is where backing quality and a properly sealed edge earn their money. Fix with mirror clips, a channel or an adhesive sold as mirror-safe — ordinary silicone and solvent-based adhesives can attack the backing paint and stain the reflection permanently.
A mirror on a wardrobe shutter or a full-length mirror in a walkway is somewhere a person can fall against, so it should carry a safety backing film — a polymer layer bonded to the rear that holds the pieces together if it breaks. Sliding wardrobe shutters in India typically take 5–6 mm mirror running in an aluminium system, and the system’s specification decides the exact thickness.
Large, uninterrupted and looked at all day, so flatness matters more here than anywhere else. These are usually 6 mm silver mirror with safety backing film, supported off the floor as well as fixed to the wall, and set out so the joints fall where they are least visible rather than wherever the sheet sizes happen to land.
LEDs either wash the wall from behind the mirror or light an etched band on its face, and the practical planning item is a power point in the right place behind the mirror before the tiling goes on. Defogger pads — a thin heating film bonded to the back — keep a patch clear after a hot shower and need their own supply. Decide both early: retro-fitting either one means taking the mirror off the wall.

The reflective coating on the back. Silver mirror reflects brighter and truer and resists moisture much better; aluminium mirror is cheaper and reflects slightly darker. In a bathroom or a coastal city the difference shows up as black creeping in from the edges of an aluminium mirror after a few years, so silver is worth the small extra for anything in a damp room.
Moisture has reached the back of the mirror and attacked the coating. It is usually some combination of a lower-grade backing, an unsealed edge, an adhesive or silicone that was not mirror-safe, and a bathroom with no exhaust. Silver mirror with intact protective paint, a sealed edge and mirror-safe fixings is how you avoid it — once the blackening starts it cannot be reversed.
Not after it has been silvered — the coating and the backing paint would not survive the furnace, so an ordinary mirror is annealed glass and breaks into sharp pieces. The normal way to make a mirror safe in India is a safety backing film bonded to the rear, which holds the fragments in place. Ask for it on wardrobe shutters, full-length mirrors and gym walls.
