Nearly every railing quote you will see is one of these, or a mix of two. The differences are structural rather than stylistic: they change what has to be fixed into the slab, how much site error the system can absorb, and how much of the railing you end up looking at.
Stainless-steel spigots bolted into the slab grip the bottom of each panel, and above them there is nothing but glass. It is the most common frameless system in India because the spigots are adjustable, so small errors along the slab edge can be dialled out. Every bolt hole is drilled before the glass is toughened — a toughened panel cannot be drilled afterwards, so the hole positions have to be right the first time.
A continuous aluminium U-channel is fixed along the slab edge and each panel is dry-glazed into it with wedges and gaskets, or grouted in. The line is the cleanest of any system because the fixings vanish into the channel. The trade-off is that the channel needs a straight, level, structurally sound edge to sit on — there is far less adjustment available than with spigots.
Panels bolt to the face of the slab or a fascia beam on standoff pins rather than sitting on top of it, so the full floor width stays usable and the glass reads as a floating sheet. Same rule as spigots: the pin holes are drilled before toughening, and what sits behind them has to be structural concrete — not screed, not tile bedding.
Vertical posts in stainless steel or aluminium carry a top handrail, with glass as infill between the posts. Because each panel is smaller and supported on more than one side, the glass works harder for less thickness, and the posts absorb an uneven slab edge that would defeat a frameless system. It is the most forgiving option on site and usually the least expensive.
A slotted cap rail along the top of the glass ties the panels together, protects the exposed top edge from knocks and gives people something to hold. Frameless railings are often specified without one for the cleaner line — a legitimate choice, but it leaves the panels and their fixings to carry everything on their own, which is a decision for whoever does the structural design rather than a styling preference.
The same systems behave differently by location. An indoor staircase railing is sheltered, and most of its difficulty is the fixing detail into treads or a stringer. A balcony faces weather and wind. A terrace or a coastal parapet faces the most of both, which pushes the hardware to a higher grade of stainless steel and makes the wind calculation part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Most Indian railings are 12 mm toughened or 12 mm laminated-toughened, and framed post-and-rail systems with smaller infill panels can go thinner. The honest answer is that railing thickness is set by structural design — panel size, how many edges are supported, the fixing system and, outdoors, the wind pressure. Where the railing guards a drop, ask for glass that stays in place after it breaks. Toughened glass breaks into blunt granules — safe underfoot, but the panel disappears, which is the wrong failure mode at the edge of a balcony. Laminated, usually laminated-toughened, holds its fragments on the interlayer and remains in the opening. IS 16231 (Part 4) and NBC 2016 treat railings as a critical location for exactly this reason.
Frameless spigot and base-channel systems give the uninterrupted view, and they want a sound, reasonably true slab edge plus all drilling done before toughening. Post-and-rail is more forgiving on site, works with thinner infill panels and usually costs less, at the price of a visible frame. Standoff pins sit in between: they free up the floor and float the glass, but they need structural concrete behind them.
It depends on thickness, how the panel is supported and the load it has to carry, so there is no single figure worth quoting. A frameless panel cantilevered from spigots along its bottom edge behaves very differently from the same glass held on three sides in a framed system.
